Could Monmouth be the world’s first “Wikipedia town”? In an ambitious project, the council of Monmouth in Wales has implemented free WiFi across the town and overseen the creation of nearly 500 Wikipedia entries about the town.Special QR codes have been attached to over 1000 of the town’s buildings, allowing tourists with smart phones to access the entries and take a virtual guided tour in over 25 languages. Contributors to the project ranged from businesses to university students and school children.
The council hopes the articles will provide much more up to date – and detailed – information than is possible in traditional tourist information.
Monmouth already has quite an Internet presence, with a town web site, blog, and Twitter account.
