Mexican authorities have created a free mobile phone app to alert users when an earthquake is imminent. The earthquake alert app uses data logged by the Mexican Seismological Service around the country, and sounds an alarm if seismic activity greater than magnitude 6.5 is detected. Although the app can only give a few seconds warning of an impending quake, authorities feel it is better than no warning and could prevent injuries and save lives. At the moment the app is only available for Blackberry phones.
