5 AI & Robotics posters for ITGS HL students

The Uncanny valley poster

The 2018 ITGS case study focuses on toys and dolls with AI. Here are five infographics that make excellent classroom posters. They contain examples that can be further researched by students or linked to the case study. They are also useful for the Artificial intelligence topic, which is a major part of ITGS HL.

Uncanny valley

The term “uncanny valley” refers to the (often slightly uncomfortable) feeling we get when we see robots that look very close to human beings. The highlight of this poster is the gallery of humanoid robots. These make great examples for students to perform further background research on. The level of technological development in the last few years is incredible. It seems reasonable that MAGS may be looking to develop humanoid or android robot toys in the future, so this is a resource worth studying. (Image source)

Companion Robots – Social Machines

This great poster documents the history of social robots – machines developed specifically to interact with humans. The Doll called Alicia case study focuses on toys. However, there is a significant overlap between the technologies used in these companion robots and those that may be added to future toys.

The infographic also has several examples of these robots which students can research further as background reading to the case study. (Image source: Futurism)

A Guide to Modern AI

This guide to artificial intelligence charts the history of the discipline, with examples. It also suggests ways AI may be made more life-like in the future, with artificial vision, hearing, and other senses. With toy dolls such as Hello Barbie or My Friend Cayla already able to “listen” to a child’s conversation, perhaps the future suggested in the case study is not far away. (Image source)

History of Chat Bots

Communication and conversation are a key part of the dolls MAGS want to develop. From Eliza to Cortana, this poster highlights key breakthroughs in AI conversation technology. A good exercise may be to ask ITGS students what techniques could be used to improve these technologies or make them more relevant to a conversation with a child. (Image source)

The Rise of Robotics and AI

This poster charting the development of robotics technology should help students understand the pace of change. A good classroom exercise might be to have students predict future developments based on this. They can then relate these to the Doll called Alicia case study and predict how the AI toys of the future might look. This exercise would also be useful for the HL Expert Systems, AI, and Robotics topic. In both cases there is the opportunity to discuss potential social impacts, plus any legal or ethical restrictions that may need to be made. (Image source)
