Pedestrians fined for texting while walking

Police in the US town of Fort Lee, New Jersey, have started to fine pedestrians for texting on their phones while walking. In an extension of jaywalking laws, 117 pedestrians have been fined $85 each in the last six weeks. The move is an attempt to reduce injuries caused by distracted pedestrians failing to look both ways and follow The Green Cross Code.

Laws governing text messaging whilst driving have been enacted by many US states, but this appears to be the first attempt at restricting texting pedestrians.
